Summary

The Godparent Trap by Rachel Van Dyken is a heartwarming, enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy centered around unexpected parenthood.

Colby, a carefree food blogger with a passion for travel, suddenly finds her world flipped upside down when a tragic accident makes her co-guardian of her best friend’s two young children. She’s forced to give up her spontaneous lifestyle and put down roots—something she never planned on doing. To make things even more complicated, she must share custody with Rip, the children’s uncle and her complete opposite. Rip is a serious, by-the-book accountant who values control and structure, and he doesn’t trust Colby’s flighty ways.

As the two clash over everything from parenting styles to daily routines, they begin to uncover each other’s softer sides. Despite the chaos and challenges, a slow-burn romance begins to bloom. Together, they learn that family isn’t about perfection—it’s about love, compromise, and showing up when it matters most.

It’s a funny, emotional, and swoony story about grief, growth, and the unexpected ways life can bring people together.

Review

I first picked up this book on a long road trip with my boyfriend and his family. I never read the synopsis but just after the prologue I could figure out where it was heading. Van Dyken has created something beautiful with this story filled with the perfect balance of tragedy and comedy.

This was a very quick read for me since it flows together so nicely. It felt as if I was watching from above and witnessing their story unfold, falling in love with this family dynamic as much as Colby and Rip, maybe even more. Through the whole book I noticed myself forgetting it was a fictional story feeling grief and joy with the characters, and personally it takes a lot for me to forget the barrier between fiction and reality.

Although I would give ‘The Godparent Trap’ a 3.5 star rating I highly recommend reading. There weren’t many surprising turns that kept me guessing but it definitely kept me entertained and involved with the characters. Feeling the butterflies from the new love and interactions between not only Rip and Colby but the kids as well was a feeling I wanted to continue, it almost felt as if I wanted to keep up with their life no matter the excitement.

This was my first read by Rachel van Dyken but definitely won’t be my last!

“you’re like a fucking hurricane- a chaotic beautiful mess of waves and wind, powerful, daunting, and any guy- especially ones like Banks- would risk his life during the storm just to see if he can survive it.” – Rachel Van Dyken
